Can I find another excuse for eating there? Since my first visit there, I've been impressed by the ambience of the place and the quality of the food. The Sultan has the feel of a home to which you have been invited. The personally focussed service complements the fresh, regularly updated mix of the best of Indian food, well cooked in a clean sharp manner that makes this not only the best Indian restaurant outside the Uk but the best in the UK,
I just love The Sultan and have had many memorable meals there, It's the kind of restaurant I love to go to with friends, family and work collegues, you can order lots of wonderful dishes between you, and share them all, so it's a food lover's paradise. The unique aromatic cuisine, together with a relaxed, but vibrant atmosphere and impeccable service makes for an extremely pleasurable dining experience. The popularity of the restaurant is such a credit to Mr.Naim Munshi, I wish Him continued success, and look forward to my next visit
I recommend this restaurant to everyone, you will never be dissapointed.

Been to The Sultan twice now. The staff are extremely friendly. The converted church decor is very nice and interesting. The food was delicious and cooked using the freshest ingredients. I will visit The Sultan many times more. Highly recommended

The Sultan is my favourite restaurant in Lancaster. The food is very good, but what makes it a cut above any competition is the wonderful service. My husband and I always come here for celebratory meals, and we are treated like old friends. A fantastic place to spend an evening!

I have been going to the Sultan for years now and always feel amongst friends when I am there. They always make you feel welcome, and nothing is ever a problem. I'm happy eating alone there, with my friends and with my family, (it's the sort of place that is good for children esp. if you have a young family) and I don't feel that the alcohol-free policy is a downside - quite the opposite.

Wonderfully fresh-tasting and authentic dishes” have made quite a name for this intriguingly-housed subcontinental; “the only downside is the no-alcohol rule – instead try the staggeringly gorgeous mango lassi”; downstairs, the cafe/gallery is a “brilliant and very cheap lunch-time venue.

If not quite every town, at least every University town has to have one, though the Sultan, it must be said, does not have too much in the way of competition. However, it does not rest upon its laurels as evidenced by an imposing range of awards, and even more convincingly by a steady stream of regulars.

Décor is fairly conventional and the spirit of Islam is heavily invoked which is fine, but what about the food which is, after all, why we're there. Well, the news on that front is good too and whilst you may not be rushed off your feet by eastern surprise, you will be presented with recognisable, well-prepared dishes that will gladden your tastebuds and do all those things that the lifestyle mags say spiced food does for you nowadays.

Mind you, a lot of us have known that all along and are just pleased to have our little weaknesses clothed with trendy approval. So enjoy your seafood samosas and good range of pakoras before moving to the Sultan balti special or the desi prawns, or palak gosht even, where the spinach comes thorough strongly and the lamb is cooked as for a curry. Puddings are all fairly predictable too though I rather fancied the idea of the orange bomb, a splendidly indulgent proposition in which vanilla ice cream is combined with real fruit orange sauce and covered with milk chocolate, another blow for freedom from the tyranny of what is thought to be good for you.

Whatever people like me might say about a restaurant, what really matters is do people go there in sufficient numbers for it to remain viable. If so that represents a need and Sultan does a very good job of meeting that need in Lancaster.

My wife and I have tried many Indian restaurants all over the North West and we have found this to be the best by far. They don't serve alcohol, but the drinks they do serve are incredible. The staff, food and drinks are so good, when we fancy a special Indian meal, we travel 53 miles just to eat there. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed.
PS. Below the restaurant in the semi-basement is a Food Court and Art Gallery

it's by far the best restaurant in town. Good food, impeccable service, great ambience. I recommend the sultan balti special, my favourite dish there. They don't serve alcohol but the mango lassi is superb.

We went for a birthday dinner for my husband and two small kids. The staff was amazing and made special plates for the kids. We loved the converted cathedral, and the food was awesome.
